Do you feel a persistent sense of emptiness or numbness? Maybe you feel disconnected from the things you once enjoyed. You may be overwhelmed, unmotivated, or struggling to find hope. Depression can make everyday life feel heavy and erode any sense of hope. But I want you to know: healing is possible, and I’m here to support you through depression therapy in NYC.

Depression is a serious and overwhelming condition that affects how you think, feel, and behave, leading to many emotional and physical issues. It’s more than just sadness, and it’s more common than you might think: nearly 29% of adults (almost three in ten) have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lives. Women are also more likely to experience it than men.

Many people struggle to ask for help, often believing they’re weak or should be able to handle it on their own. Some think it’s just a phase they’ll ‘snap out of’, while others may feel hopeless, unable to imagine ever feeling better.

But here’s the truth: with the right support and treatment, things can improve. You can feel better. And you can return to truly living, not just surviving.

Common Symptoms Depression Therapy Can Help With

Depression can occur as a single episode or as multiple episodes throughout your life. People with depression typically experience symptoms most of the day, nearly every day.

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness.
  • Irritability, frustration, or angry outbursts.
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities.
  • Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
  • Changes in sleep or appetite.
  • Frequent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, or suicide attempts.
  • Slowed thinking, speaking, or physical movements.

Types of Depressive Disorders

There are several types of depressive disorders, including:

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

This form of depression involves milder symptoms than major depression but lasts for at least two years. It can be hard to recognize, as the symptoms can start to feel like a normal part of life, even though they’re not.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

This is the most common, and often the most severe, form of depression. It’s diagnosed when you experience a low mood and other symptoms, most of the time for at least two weeks.

There are also subtypes of major depressive disorder, including:

  • Seasonal affective disorder (Seasonal depression): Typically appears during the fall and winter months and improves in the spring and summer.
  • Prenatal and postpartum depression: Occurs during pregnancy or within four weeks after giving birth.
  • Atypical depression: Characterized by mood reactivity (a temporary improvement in mood in response to positive events). It can also involve increased appetite and sensitivity to rejection.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder

A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that includes mood-related symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and depression. These symptoms typically ease a few days after menstruation begins, but can significantly impact daily life.

My Approach to Treating Depression Therapy in NYC

I believe in a practical, collaborative approach where you are the expert on you. As a partner in your treatment, my goal is to ensure you feel truly heard. I want to help you feel better as soon as possible so you can get back on the road to a better life.

My approach to depression treatment is grounded in a strong therapeutic relationship and a combination of evidence-based techniques.

Some of these approaches include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is highly effective in treating depression. Together, we’ll work to identify unhealthy thinking patterns and challenge them to develop more positive ones. Over time, you’ll be able to create healthier responses to life’s challenges.

Practical Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

This therapeutic approach allows us to explore issues rooted in past experiences and work through them. It also focuses on unconscious mechanisms, helping you gain a deeper understanding of their influence. With time, this understanding can foster a greater sense of self-awareness and control.

Self-Compassion Techniques

Self-compassion involves self-kindness, mindfulness, and a sense of common humanity. When combined with other therapeutic methods, it can help reduce depressive symptoms. You’ll learn to treat yourself with kindness and acknowledge your pain without judgment. Over time, accepting your experience as part of being human can reduce avoidance and lessen symptom-related rumination.

Through depression therapy in NYC, I’ll help you find greater satisfaction in life and reconnect with your strengths. As your depression therapist, I will provide the tools and support you need to regain motivation and fulfillment. In time, you’ll build the confidence to move through life with more ease and compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I live a normal life with depression?

Absolutely. Depression makes you look at the world through dark-colored lenses, and it may feel like there’s no way back. But I want you to know that with the right support and proper treatment through depression counseling, healing is possible.

Depression typically doesn’t go away on its own. It’s common to feel doubtful that things will ever improve, and taking the first step can feel overwhelming, but that first step is all it takes to begin the journey. Let me help you rediscover meaning and joy in your life and reconnect with yourself and those you love.

What is high-functioning depression?

High achievers with high-functioning depression are often able to maintain a high level of performance despite experiencing depressive symptoms. This can make the condition harder to recognize in high-achieving individuals. Left untreated, this type of depression can lead to isolation and become increasingly difficult to manage.

Interestingly, studies show that depression is particularly prevalent among high achievers. For example, among CEOs, the rate is estimated to range from twice the national average of 20% to as high as 50%. Contributing factors may include maladaptive perfectionism, excessive self-criticism, an identity built around achievements rather than personality, competitive comparisons, and a lack of work-life balance.

Because many symptoms are masked by a drive for success, recognizing high-functioning depression can be challenging. It’s important to pay attention to the following signs and seek depression counseling:

  • Persistent self-criticism.
  • Feeling paralyzed by perfectionism.
  • Neglecting self-care.
  • Escapist behaviors (e.g., overworking, excessive exercise, substance use).
  • Persistent fatigue.
  • Physical symptoms.
What can I do to cope with my depression?

If you’re struggling with a depressive disorder, it’s important to understand that proper treatment is necessary to truly overcome it. Depression rarely goes away on its own. However, there are small, practical steps you can take to help manage the symptoms and ease some of the emotional discomfort.

Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Reach out to family and friends: You might feel tempted to isolate yourself, but sharing your concerns can strengthen your connections and remind you that you’re not alone.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs: Over time, they often worsen symptoms and make depression harder to manage.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Exercise regularly, reduce or eliminate caffeine, eat a balanced diet, and practice good sleep hygiene.
  • Focus on the basics: Remove obligations when possible, set realistic goals, and allow yourself to do less when you’re feeling low.
  • Keep a journal: Writing down your thoughts and emotions can help you process what you’re feeling and improve your overall mood.

If you’re experiencing suicidal thoughts, please reach out to someone you trust and/or call the 988 Lifeline. You’re not alone—many people have felt this way and found support, healing, and hope. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. You deserve to live a life where you feel great.
