Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

The first step is a free 20-minute consultation call. It’s a chance for you to share what’s bringing you to therapy, ask any questions you have, and get a feel for whether working together is the right fit. There’s no pressure and no commitment.

You can schedule a consultation call here: https://calendly.com/susanpodbielski/20min

What issues do you work with?

I work with adults navigating a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, life transitions, burnout, perfectionism, and low self-esteem.

I have a particular focus on high-achieving women who are managing the pressures of professional life alongside personal challenges. Though I warmly welcome anyone who feels my approach might be a good fit.

What happens in our sessions?

Sessions are a dedicated 50 minutes for you—a private, judgment-free space to explore what’s getting in your way. We’ll work collaboratively, with you as the expert on your own life.

I draw on a blend of psychodynamic therapy, CBT, mindfulness, and self-compassion practices to help you understand patterns, shift perspectives, and take meaningful action. Sessions are available in person at my Upper West Side office or online via secure video.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Yes. I see clients both in person at my office on the Upper West Side at 185 West End Avenue, Suite 1C, New York City, and online via secure video. Many clients appreciate the flexibility of choosing whichever format fits their schedule, and some mix both. Either way, the quality and confidentiality of our work remain the same.

How long does therapy take?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on your goals, your history, and how you respond to the work.

Some clients come in with a specific issue and feel significant relief in a few months. Others choose to continue longer for deeper personal growth. We’ll check in regularly on your progress and adjust as we go. What matters most is that the pace works for you.

What are your fees?

My session fee is available upon request. I’m happy to discuss this during our initial consultation call. While I don’t accept insurance directly, many clients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. See below for details.

Why don’t you take insurance?

I made the decision to practice outside of insurance networks so I can offer you something insurance rarely allows: truly individualized care.

When insurance is involved, diagnoses are required, records are shared with third parties, and treatment length and type are often dictated by coverage—not by what’s clinically best for you.

Working privately means our sessions stay confidential, our work stays focused on your needs, and we’re not rushing to meet an insurer’s timeline.

Can I use my out-of-network benefits?

Possibly—and it’s worth checking. Many PPO plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network therapy costs.

Here’s how to find out:

  • Call the member services number on your insurance card and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.
  • Ask about your deductible, reimbursement percentage, and whether a referral is needed.
  • After each session, I’ll provide a superbill: a detailed receipt you can submit directly to your insurer for reimbursement.

You pay my fee at the time of service, then submit the superbill and receive reimbursement directly from your insurance company. Some clients receive 50–80% back, depending on their plan.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This allows me to offer the time to another client who may need it.

  • Cancellations with less than 48 hours’ notice: $75 fee
  • No-shows (missed sessions without notice): $100 fee
  • Illness or a family emergency: These are handled with compassion and are not subject to the cancellation fee.

Please note that insurance does not cover late cancellation or no-show fees.

Is what I share in therapy confidential?

Yes, what you share with me stays between us. Confidentiality is both an ethical obligation and a legal one.

There are a small number of exceptions required by law, including if there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. I’ll review the full details of your privacy rights with you before we begin.

Do you work with men as well as women?

Absolutely. While my practice has a particular focus on high-achieving women, I warmly welcome men who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or the pressure to perform and succeed. The challenges of modern professional life don’t discriminate—and neither does good therapy.
